All new 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R matches 700 horsepower finally launched. Our initial thought when Ford unveiled the third-generation Ford F-150 Raptor in February 2021 was, “Where’s the V8?” The next Raptor was expected to make a triumphant comeback to eight-cylinder power, but the Ram TRX has been eating away at a market Ford had long monopolised. Even while we would have wanted to immediately witness the alleged Ford F-150 Raptor, we are now greeted by the real thing, and the wait was well worth it.

Ford officially announced the eight-cylinder Raptor, and there were two camps in the rumour mill on which V8 will go inside. The winning wager was also the favourite: the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 from the Shelby GT500. Some people had suggested the naturally aspirated 7.3-liter “Godzilla” pushrod. But this V8 is different from the one in Ford’s super pony.

Ford retuned and modified the “Predator” V8 for greater low- and mid-range performance, while the GT500 GT500 generates a staggering 760 horsepower (567 kilowatts) and 625 pound-feet (847 Newton-meters) of torque. Because of this, the Raptor R’s V8 has 640 lb-ft (867 Nm) of torque and is available at 4,250 rpm as opposed to 5,000 rpm. Additionally, the torque curve is generally more forgiving throughout the entire rev range.

Ford achieved this by installing a smaller pulley—74 millimetres as opposed to 80 in the GT500 and recalibrating the 2.65-liter supercharger on the V8. However, peak output drops to an even 700 horsepower (522 kW), which the internet will continue to note is less than the TRX’s 702 hp (523.4 kW) for the remainder of this Raptor’s existence.

Ford representatives Motor1.com spoke to defiantly stated that the Raptor R weighs just 5,950 pounds (2,699 kilogrammes), which is a notable 400 pounds (181 lb) less than the Ram TRX and only 100 pounds (45 kg) more than the V6 Raptor. It is unclear how Ford will handle that inevitable narrative. Therefore, when your Mopar-lover friend mentions the two extra horsepower in his truck, make sure to mention the Raptor R’s superior power-to-weight ratio. That’ll let them know.

Ford also made changes to improve the supercharged V8’s durability, including a bigger air inlet, a deeper oil pan for aggressive grades, and new oil cooler and filter. But the 5.2-liter V8’s customary mate, the dual-clutch transmission from Tremec, is noticeably absent. The 10-speed automatic transmission from the normal Raptor is still in use and has the same gear ratios, with the main alterations being made to retain reliability when partnered with the torquey supercharged V8.

We have some bad news if you were hoping Ford would come up with something completely new rather than just cramming a big-ole V8 under the Raptor’s hood. The ultra-capable suspension and variety of driving modes are the same as the standard Raptor, with the exception of slightly stronger front springs to manage the added weight of the engine. This vehicle will continue to be highly capable on difficult terrain because Ford is making 37-inch tyres standard (they are available on the V6), but don’t come in expecting significant changes to the suspension.

The restraint Ford used on the interior and exterior is more frustrating. A new R insignia is displayed in the lower driver-side corner of the grille, and the power dome on the hood is an inch higher. Ford’s famous Code Orange is worn on that emblem, as well as the last R in the “Raptor” insignia on the hood and tailgate. It is also present on the tow hooks and with the (thankfully optional) graphics. The wheel arches have black paint on them. The standard Recaro seats in the cabin have black fabric that varies between leather and Alcantara.

And what is the cost of this particular blend of insanity in the Raptor R? shockingly $109,145. Yes, this half-ton truck’s base price has blown past the six-figure mark. The Raptor R’s pricing includes every option on the original Raptor except for premium paint and a sunroof, so think again before someone storms Dearborn demanding the execution of a Ford accountant. This features a 700-hp V8, the 37s and beadlock-capable wheels, all the active safety equipment, the most potent music system, the most luxurious cabin with standard carbon fibre trim, and more.

The TRX, which starts at little over $80,000, offers a somewhat higher quality of life, but the option catalogue requires an additional $20,000 to equal the Raptor R’s level of equipment. Although the difference of $10,000 between the equipped TRX and the base Raptor R may seem substantial, if you have the cash to purchase and maintain a 700-hp off-road pickup truck, what is $10,000?
